5D4N Kota Kinabalu Day 2 : Mount Kinabalu, Timpohon Trail, Laban Rata

05.30 am – Woke up to a nice big cup of energy drink.

And so did Gayfrey and


06.10 am – All packed up and ready to go!

07.11 am – Collected our packed lunch,

paid for the return transport to Timpohon gate from Kinabalu Park HQ and

collected our tags.

The weather stayed awesome!

07.30 am – Us with our guide, Petrus ‘Jalan Dulu’ Soudi. The coolest guide in our opinion. From the beginning till the end, Petrus will always be following us for 5 minutes, then stops for a smoke, and then catch up to us and follow us for another 5 minutes and stop for a smoke, and it went on and on the entire journey! Usually when he wants to stop he’ll just say ‘Jalan Dulu’. To be able to catch up to us in lightning speed, I think Petrus must’ve been a reincarnated horse.

6 km of uphill. Don’t mess around, man. Between easy, medium and hard, climbing Kinabalu is actually VERY HARD. No joke.

The view along the way was pretty okay at the beginning,

as after that, all you’re gonna see along the ways are steps,

and steps.

One of the very many locals who carried tens of kilograms of supply on their backs up to Laban Rata just for us. She’s a reminder to eat every last bit of rice and drop of drink that we take.

08.20 am – Took us about 20 minutes to scale the first kilometer and boy was it hard!

08.50 am – Half an hour for the 2nd kilometer.

Tank of unfiltered water found in every hut. Later, I discovered that the higher the shelter, the cleaner the water.

09.10 am – At 2.5km.

I noticed that the steps started to get pretty rocky.

09.20 am – At 3km.

At Mempening shelter. The 4th of 7 between Laban Rata and Timpohon gate.

We stopped a bit longer, about 10 minutes, cause we played with squirrels.

09.50 am – At 3.5km.

Meanwhile, somewhere below, John was having fun by himself.

10.02 am – Reached Layang Layang hut, the 5th shelter, which was almost 4km into our journey. This was the point where Timpohon trail meets Mesilau trail.

We were super hungry and so we stopped for a snack. We ate 4 bars total.

10.12 am – At 4km.

From here onwards, the path become pretty rocky.

The only concern was grip, as the rocks were wet and slippery.

We realized that we must be in the clouds as we’re surrounded by mist.


5D4N Kota Kinabalu Day 0

The following are the stuff I brought with me for my trip to Kota Kinabalu.

2 hiking poles. A MUST. If you’ve stumbled upon this page and are heading to Mount Kinabalu, PLEASE make sure you have 2 and not 1 hiking pole. These 2 babies preserved my legs, KNEES especially. Of course you can still buy carved hiking sticks at Kinabalu Park for RM5 each but they are not as light as proper hiking poles. Moreover, these 2 hiking poles which I bought for RM16 each has shock absorbers that tremendously help you move better for hours after hours during ascend and descent.

Knee and ankle brace. A must for people with a history of injuries. I’ve injured my left ankle and right knee once before.

2 very important items for climbing Mount Kinabalu.

Milo wafer cubes. It doesn’t have to be those expensive type of energy bars. As long as it’s high in calories it will do.

Custard cream biscuits.

Instant cup noodles. A must as the packed lunch during ascend is shiteous. Of course you can only eat it once you reach Laban Rata as there aren’t hot water along the way.

16 pieces of medicated plasters for the 3 of us.

5 oral rehydration salts.

2 rows of paracetamol for pain relieve.

Tissue papers. There is not enough toilet paper at the mountain hostels.

Handkerchief. A definite must for people with chronic sinus issues. Your nose will run faster as you near the peak, as it gets colder and colder.

Apple cider vinegar. All-in-one anti bacteria, anti nausea, insect repellent, blister treatment.

My own tube of shampoo as I’m dandruff prone.

Rubber bands. You never know when you might need it.

Flip flops are the best choice as they are light. You’ll definitely need it when you reach Laban Rata.

The coolest rechargeable head lamp bought at only RM26.

The 13 LED bright-as-hell head lamp. A definite MUST during the ascend from Laban Rata to the Low’s Peak.

Extra thick gloves for keeping the hands warm and preventing rope burn.

The accessories.

A good quality windbreaker is important as it gets very windy and cold during the ascend to Low’s Peak. The temperature can be as low as 3ºC.

Track bottoms.

2 pair of socks. Nothing more nothing less.

2 t-shirts.

Sweater No.1.

Sweater No.2.

2 shorts.

The clothes.

All rolled up into plastic bags. Rolling clothes save space and prevent wrinkles. The plastic bags are for protecting them from the rain.

I managed to fit all of the above into the bag. Total weight was about 5kg.

The Friday I Repaired My Bathroom Door’s Lock

09.00 am – Breakfast.

10.00 am – Grocerying at Tesco. Bought a bottle of shaving foam, lizard trap, Shurei hair wax,

a packet of coffee-mate, mamee kari berapi, ebiko sushi,

sesame oil, a tub of honey,

black & white socks, disposable shavers,

a blade sharpener and toothbrushes.

11.00 am – Went for a haircut.

11.30 am – Picked up a pair of Topwin

12.30 pm – Lunch.

01.30 pm – My bathroom door’s old squeeky lock.

It took me 10 minutes just to remove

the deadbolt latch and

another 10 minutes to remove the knob altogether.

At least I got the job done

removing the old lock completely.

Once you have experience,

fixing in the new door lock is easy.
